Washington Dulles (IAD)

Washington Dulles International is United Airlines' East Coast hub for transatlantic and Asia long-haul flying, serving roughly 25 million passengers a year. The Eero Saarinen-designed main terminal — the iconic curved roof building — remains in use as the headhouse, with passengers reaching the airside concourses via the airport's underground AeroTrain (which replaced the old mobile lounges in 2010). The Silver Line Metro extension finally reached Dulles in 2022, ending decades of debate and giving the airport direct rail service to downtown DC for under $7.

5 things you didn't know about Washington Dulles

Verified by the CompareFlights team
  1. 1Washington Dulles is named after John Foster Dulles (Eisenhower-era Secretary of State, 1953–1959) — his statue, originally installed at the 1962 opening, still stands in the main terminal entry hall.
  2. 2The Eero Saarinen-designed main terminal building (1962) is a US National Historic Landmark — and the iconic curved roofline directly inspired the future TWA Flight Center at JFK.
  3. 3The Silver Line Metro extension from Reston to Dulles opened in November 2022 — connecting downtown DC in 50 minutes, but taking 22 years from initial 2000 proposal to opening.
  4. 4The 'Mobile Lounges' (custom 1962-vintage passenger-carrying trucks) that ferry passengers from the main terminal to outlying gates are still in operation — the only fleet of their type still in commercial airline service in the world.
  5. 5IAD's primary runway 1R/19L is 11,500 feet long — the longest in the entire DC metro region, giving it the only DC-area runway capable of full transcontinental cargo operations.

Frequently asked about IAD

Does Metro really go directly to Dulles now?

Yes. The Silver Line extension opened in November 2022, and the Dulles International Airport station sits in front of the main terminal. Trains reach downtown DC stations like Metro Center, L'Enfant Plaza, and the Smithsonian in about 50-60 minutes for $2.50-7 depending on peak/off-peak.

What's the AeroTrain?

It's the underground people mover that connects the Main Terminal with concourses A, B, and C. Trains run continuously every 2 minutes and trips between any two stations take 4-7 minutes. It replaced the slow mobile lounges for most routings, though those still operate to concourse D occasionally.

Where does United fly long-haul from at IAD?

Concourses C and D handle United's wide-body international operation, including service to Tokyo, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Brussels, London, Paris, Rome, Tel Aviv, Mumbai, Delhi, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. The Polaris Lounge sits between C and D.

Is IAD or DCA closer to downtown DC?

DCA — Reagan National is 4 miles from the Capitol with direct Metro service in under 15 minutes. IAD is 26 miles out in Virginia and takes 50-60 minutes by Metro or 30-45 by car off-peak. IAD has more international choice but DCA wins for short domestic.
