Legacy / full-service network carrier · oneworld (founding member, 1999)
American Airlines (AA)
American Airlines is the largest US carrier by passenger traffic and one of the three legacy network airlines that dominate domestic full-service flying. The airline operates a hub-and-spoke network anchored on roughly nine US hubs and connects them to destinations across the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Its mainline fleet of around 960 aircraft is supported by an even larger regional operation flown under the American Eagle brand, giving it the deepest small-city reach of any US airline. The carrier we know today took its current shape after the 2013 merger with US Airways, which combined two large networks and resolved the company's 2011 bankruptcy. American is a founding member of oneworld and partners particularly closely with British Airways, Iberia, Qantas, and Japan Airlines. It employs roughly 130,000 people across mainline operations.
